Understanding EFTC Income Eligibility
What is Area Median Income (AMI)?
Area Median Income (AMI) is the midpoint of a region's income distribution, calculated annually by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Half of families in the area earn more than the AMI, and half earn less. HUD uses metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) and non-metro county groupings to define each region.
The 300% Threshold
Under the Education Freedom Tax Credit program, families with household income at or below 300% of their area's median family income are eligible for EFTC scholarships. This generous threshold ensures that working- and middle-class families across the country can access educational opportunities for their children.
Why Does It Vary by County?
Income levels differ significantly from one region to another. A family earning $80,000 in rural Pennsylvania has very different purchasing power than a family earning $80,000 in the San Francisco Bay Area. County-based thresholds ensure that eligibility reflects local economic conditions rather than a one-size-fits-all national figure.
When Is the Data Updated?
HUD publishes updated median family income estimates each fiscal year, typically in the spring. Our calculator uses the most recent HUD Income Limits data available. The fiscal year shown in your results indicates which HUD data release was used for the calculation.
